Dickinson College is a beautiful college located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. With a 35 percent acceptance rate, the college is accessible for many students. The college was founded by Dr. Benjamin Rush, a founding father of our nation. It’s named for John Dickinson, another founding father and fifth President of Pennsylvania, a title preceding the title of Governor of the Commonwealth. The college has a president and Supreme Court chief justice on its list of alumni. Unfortunately, they were the undistinguished James Buchanan and Roger Taney. But don’t let that discourage you from checking out this really nice school!

While in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, I visited the U.S.Army War College, which is a very competitive program for a lieutenant colonel or colonel to earn a master’s degree in strategic studies. Notable alumni include Pershing, Eisenhower, Patton, and Bradley. I don’t expect my students to go there. At the War College, there is the Army Heritage Trail, featuring displays of howitzers, tanks, and a helicopter. Here I am in their the World War I trench network, standing on a fire step and looking out over the parapet. I’m too tall to use the fire step, too short not to use it.The golf course has a cannon on the first tee. It’s a long hole. I wish I could have used the cannon.

Gettysburg College is next to the famous battlefield. During the battle, Pennsylvania Hall was used as a field hospital. The college president gave the benediction after President Lincoln’s Address, during the ceremonies at the opening of the Soldier’s National Cemetery. Not surprisingly, the college has a renowned Civil War studies program. Dwight Eisenhower and his wife moved into a house across the street from the college after he left the Army. He became a member of the Board of Trustees. Libertarian congressman and former presidential candidate Ron Paul is listed as an alumnus.
