The University of Pittsburgh’s Tower of Learning is the tallest university building in America. After the University of Moscow, it’s the tallest in the world. Right next door, I visited Carnegie Mellon University. Carnegie Mellon is a private research university just around the corner from U. Pitt. Andrew Carnegie’s eponymous Carnegie Institute of Technology merged in 1967 with the part of U. Pitt founded by Andrew Mellon, known as the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research. CMU is very selective, with an 11 percent acceptance rate. John Forbes Nash, the inspiration for “A Beautiful Mind,” and artist Andy Warhol are among the famous alumni.

It seems that every campus I visit is more beautiful than the one before. Bucknell University’s quad is elevated above the admissions building. One has to climb a set of brick stairs to reach the quad. I love this school.
